Skywatch Friday: Salt of the earth

British Salt
Limited on Cledford Lane, Middlewich, Cheshire, alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal. I like the coloured lights inside the hangar but am not sure if they have any purpose.
The salt mines of Cheshire produce much of the UK’s supply of table salt and gritting salt for the roads in winter.

  1. I have never been there but my mate who is a press snapper has been down into the workings.

  2. Interesting shot Chrissy. Wonder if they clean it up further before we put it on the fish and chips, or maybe that is the gritting salt piled up next to the canal!

  3. First glance? I thought it might be an ice arena and that would be the work of the Zamboni. hahaha

  5. I wonder how do they cope with it when it rains since some of the salt is not covered?

  6. I'm also wondering what happens to it being out in the open like that. Around here they keep the road salt in big, cone-shaped buildings.

  7. Maybe it is so white inside that the coloured lights give contrast.

  8. Only lately I heard a song called alike. And yes, once it was worth as much as gold. Glad commenting works tonight. Please have a good weekend ahead.

  9. Thanks for the interesting comments everyone. Yes they do normally keep the road salt in large warehouses type places here too, presumably at a certain temperature or under certain conditions- perhaps this was undergoing some process or other prior to storage?

  10. Great photo. I love the strong blocks of colour, and how the angles all fit to make a striking composition.
