Shortest canal in England

The prize for the shortest canal in England goes to...the Wardle Canal, built in 1829 at Middlewich in Cheshire. At a mere 47 metres (154 ft) long and with one lock, it links the Shropshire Union canal (66 miles long) with the 97 mile long Trent and Mersey canal.

  1. Thats quite a bit shorter than I would have thought. I live a few hundred yards from the Leeds - Liverpool, I love walking along the towpath and feeding the ducks.

  2. Even tho it is only 154 feet long, it is beautiful and serves a purpose. We live near the Erie Canal in Brockport, New York. Our State Canal System is 524 miles long and passes through 230 towns, villages and ports. People can rent similar crafts to travel between them. If you are interested in more information, go to my blog and click on the Erie Canal in my sidebar. In 2010 the World Canal Conference was held near here (Rochester).
