Posting for Gold
Earlier this year The Royal Mail promised to paint a gold post box in the home town of each British gold medallist at London 2012. They have been good to their word. This gold post box is on Albert Square, at the top of Lloyd Street, and is gold for Greater Manchester's Olympic cyclists Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny. German-born teenager Philip lives in Manchester and 24 year old Jason was born in Farnworth. Sadly the Royal Mail will, in n unspecified time, repaint each post box in its traditional red.
You can find your favourite gold medallist Briton and their postbox's location at the Gold Postboxes site: www.goldpostboxes.com/gallery

Even more sadly - they aren't going to do it for the paralympians. They also aren't going to issue individual stamps for the paralympian gold medal winners. BAD Post Office!
ReplyDeleteFab photo - I took some the other day and there was a group of Chinese girls all posing for it - they were happy for us to take photos of them too :)
ReplyDeleteIt says on the Gold Postboxes site that they will be doing it for the Paralympians too, and so they should :)
What a nice and unique way of honouring their athletes.
ReplyDeleteI don't care what colour it is - it's a funky looking mailbox.
ReplyDeleteA photo I'm still planning to get, but I'd better get my skates on if they're going to re-paint them!
ReplyDeleteExcellent - this is the first one I've seen not on the telly. Hopefully we'll see a few more on City Daily Photo blogs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to celebrate the achievements of these games! Very festive & bit of a shame it'll be repainted.
ReplyDeleteTerrific, Chrissy. I have been trying to figure out where the nearest one to Coventry is. A little research is necessary. I really want to see one of those. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, nice to see your local golden memento. Think my nearest is in Leeds and Paul has already posted that one ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch a patriotic idea! It's great the postal service is celebrating too.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember seeing that when I went to the local lap dancing club, just around the corner from there, the other night. But it WAS dark.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea, and it would be nice if they kept them.
ReplyDeleteDeb is right I have posted on both our Leeds oylmpic champions. Personally I think the Royal Mail should keep them for the four years till Rio.
ReplyDeleteI think you must have been in the entrance of the Slug & Lettuce when you took this. I got this view the other week http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3074790 I understand also that they ARE doing them for paraolympics too.
