Commercial-free Olympics? BBC

The BBC's television and radio sport departments are now based here on Salford Quays, although they are covering most of the Olympics live from the east London stadium.

At least being a public broadcaster they will have to keep coverage commerical-free, unlike the hypocritical sponsors who are largely responsible for the western obesity crisis and have nothing to do with the health and vigour promoted by most Olympians. Two American burger and fizzy drinks companies, and a UK chocolatier spring to mind... Rant endeth.

The pop up bar called Dock, see the pink umbrellas, is proving a popular meeting spot for BBC and ITV media this summer. ITV's Granada Studios are currently building a new complex next door to the BBC and will move from their central Manchester studio in due course.

  1. Hope they secured 'official permission' and are 'licensed' to be displaying those Olympic Rings(tm)?!

  2. The sponsors with biggest budgets and most customers are those who sell the worst product.
MacDonald's, just a thin burger, Coca-cola, just a fizzy drink full of gunge, Heinekin, poor lager, yet they sell millions.
Is this advertising, is this peer pressure, I wonder.
These are OK in themselves but why so popular? Better stuff sells less.

  3. I like the photo. Nice mix of colours. As for the commercials I don't give a poop. People are able to make their on decisions.

  4. Sadly the Olympic Stadium sums up the modern world - the greatest athletes in the world in the arena to entertain and audience that simply sits there stuffing their faces with burgers and fries and supping beer and pop. Did I say 'modern world'? Sounds more like ancient Rome!

  6. That's a great photo, but I have to agree with the commercialism that's taken over (whatever happened to the olden days of Olympics-for-amateurs, or maybe it always was a commercial endeavor...)

  9. That is a funny one, and a great memory of this year Olympic games... I guess the diffusion of this picture won't be prohibited like the rest of the picture taken by the public of the actual sport event... :(

  10. I like the photo! And as for the obesity problem - just finished a book that holds the theory that wheat - chemically engineered as it all is - is to blame for our obesity and a lot of health problems. Made a lot of sense - and everything is super-sized these days too. I am not watching the Olympics - just can't handle the commercialization of everything!

  12. Looks a cool place to follow the Olympic action, which can be addictive. Just watched archery for the first time in my life and they make it look so easy!

    pretty scene
the Olympics have become one long commercial with some sports thrown in
the US opening ceremony outfits were ridiculous with their Ralph Lauren logo on them
