"V" is for VW clamper van


Volkswagen Camper Vans are still very much in vogue all over the UK, especially amongst surfers and the young at heart. This 1967 van near Lapwing Lane has unfortunately been wheel clamped (see rear left wheel), presumably without a valid permit. I guess it's going to cost about £100 for the owner to release it before it can load surfboards and head to the coast, or load guitarists and head for a music festival. Perhaps "Volkswagen" does indeed translate as "the people's car" ?

    Looks to be in great shape, I love the colour. I am always in two minds about clamping, part of me feels sorry for the "victim" and also I think if you follow the rules then like me you never get clamped. That said I would avoid ever parking in the changegate car park in the tourist village of Haworth near me.

      The old style registration plate with the letter "E" is definitely Jan to July of 1967. Although VW does seem to still make campervans etc. with variants on the name, the new ones look boring and devoid of any classic design from what I can see. So I think this is a vintage 1967 in good condition or restored.

    They have become hugely popular in oz as well and they sell for incredible sums depending on model and condition. The latest craze here is vintage caravans, my wife is desperate for one!

    We have a place in our village that restores those - so we see a lot of them. I'd love one, but a newly restored van is more expensive than a new Ford!

    I always liked the look of them. When I was a teen I wished I could drive one. Now I would only want to drive one for the novelty of it. Around the block maybe.

    Back in my "hippy" days, I used to own a 1965 VW camper. It was never clamped though. I truly wish I still had it today. Thanks for the reminder, it took me way back...
