A brick mural of a Chinese junk in the heart of Chinatown. It was completed in the late 1980s when Chinatown was revitalised with the Chinese Arch and this mural as landmarks. There are around 20,000 descendants of Chinese immigrants that live in Manchester.

Very nice depiction! Dresses up that wall - I like that they used the representation of a Chinese ship in Chinatown.
ReplyDeleteOh I like that. The more I see of your blog the more I think I really should have visited Manchester before now. I MUST make the effort this year. Any suggestions for a first-time visitor - to get a 'feel' of the City? (I can't decide where to start among all your amazing posts.)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much AJ. Would be happy to show you around if you come over from the East Midlands! If we are talking an overview of central Manchester my main day trip suggestions would consist of:
Delete1) Medieval Manchester (Chetham's School of Music, Cathedral)
2) St Anns Square, Royal Exchange, Shambles
3) Albert Square and Town Hall
4) Walk along the Rochdale canal to Castlefield basin and Deansgate Quays
5) Northern Quarter- independent shops, cafes, bars, vibrant street art
6) Chinatown
7) City Art Gallery- the Adolphe Valette paintings
All interspresed with regular coffee breaks and some good food ;-)
Thank you - that sounds good. I even managed to persuade the other half that a trip to Manchester would be a good idea. I think we might manage an overnight sometime in the next couple of months.
DeleteAnother skilled artist using three colours. Brown, white and black.
ReplyDeletean ingenious design
ReplyDeleteI really like this Chrissy, the use of tonal bricks to create shadow and depth is fabulous, a very appealing mural.
ReplyDeleteBonjour dear Chrissy!
ReplyDeleteThis image is beautiful! The mural is very creative!

An interesting representation. I like the humble quality of the painting. :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice and different!
ReplyDeleteI very much like how they've depicted waves with bricks!
ReplyDeleteThese are very muted colours for a Chinese mural! But I really like that, actually.
ReplyDeleteDon't believe I've ever seen a mosaic mural composed of brick before. Very effective. I like that the angles in the brick adds a certain abstract quality to the image. The bricks also make me think of the Great Wall. Thanks for sharing this with us and joining us this week on Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteWow that is gorgeous, and what a fascinating concept, love the continuing waves on the other wall.
ReplyDeleteohhhh this is a nice one!!
ReplyDeleteThat is beautifully done! I'm going to save your list of places to see for next year I hope!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and very effective, of course the practical side of me is busy wondering how they did it....
ReplyDeleteHow moving a work. Makes one feel the distance between here and home.
ReplyDeletePlease have a good Tuesday.
How did I miss this on Monday? What a unique mural, with bricks! And yet the junk is well-defined.
