Oldham Street old and new

Oldham Street has had its ups and downs over the decades but as the main road linking the northern quarter to the centre of Manchester it is a thriving hub once more, with record stores, funky cafes, reinvented pubs, cool bars and trendy clothes shops. Plus Forbidden Planet on the right here, every sci-fi anorak's dream. You can also live above the street in the many varied apartment blocks.

  1. I did a radio docu about the Northern Quarter in uni back in 2004, when it was still quite quiet and didn't have the multitude of shops and bars that it has now. The town planners were keen on getting as many standalone businesses into the area as possible. That's happened a little with the new bars opening. It's much cleaner and safer today, although I've not seen the proposed new lighting to make streets safer or the public services like GP surgeries and the like. It's going well, but there's still work to do according to the 2004 plans!

    1. Interesting- is it possible to hear the radio documentary online anyway CFB? Yes, it's still aimed largely at hedonism rather than some desperately services like healthcare, a Post Office, cycle lanes, green spaces etc.
