Diwali, the festival of light

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated for five days starting today. This photo was taken at the temple doors of the Gujarat Hindu Society in Preston, Lancashire, (about 30 miles north of Manchester) which I visited last week.

The following information about the festival of light is taken from the Indian website: http://www.deepavali.net/ Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Lunar Calendar. It literally translated means 'Row of Lights' (from Sanskrit: dipa = lamp / awali = row, line). It celebrates the victory of Goodness over Evil and Light over Darkness - ushering in the new year.

Wishing Happy Diwali to everyone!
Deepavali Valthukkal!
Shubh Diwali!
