Theme Day: Cobblestones

Jutland Street is on one of the few hills in the city centre and apparently the steepest street. The photo doesn't do its incline justice, despite my taking quite a few to try and capture it. People jog up residential Jutland Street too, it's not an April Fool joke, see photo below.

Thrice named, it was formerly known as Stony Brow then Junction Street and eventually Jutland Street, after the major naval battle of Jutland in World War I. You can go for a virtual drive down the cobblestones of Jutland Street.

With the City Daily Photo Blog portal currently out of action, Julie of Sydney Eye has created a page where participants in the April 1st theme (Cobblestones) can register their posts on a linky. See CDPB theme day .

  2. Hello Chrissy!
I was at Jennyfreckles blog and happened to see your comment. I don't actually know why, as I'd never even really heard of it before, but my family is flying into Manchester in June. I just randomly picked a town that was north of London to begin our European Vacation!

I will be going back and looking through your pictures and get some ideas of what great places we will be visiting while in your city.

    What a stroke of luck!

  5. They are great cobbles! At the back of my mind I think there is a northern expression about having a big night, "a night on the cobbles" obviously the joggers are running that night off. Have a great month Chrissy!

  7. great perspective with the yellow paint dripping down the cobbles - have had to look it up on my A-Z - near the Ashton canal I see. If you are meeting up with Sandi in June I wouldn't mind meeting up too if possible.

I worked near this street many years ago and I remember taking my young children there one day to show them what it was like to drive off the edge of the world. It's most odd as there isn't a gradual slope - you drive along a perfectly level road then there's this sudden drop, at which point you can't see any road in front of you. I would imagine the best place to get a photograph showing the steepness would be from the other side of Store Street at the bottom. To anyone who doesn't live near Manchester I can recommend going into Google Earth and using Street View to 'drive' over the edge.

  9. What a great street! I can almost hear the sound of tires rolling over that cobblestone!

  12. Your low perspective in the first photo is excellent. It makes the spaces between cobblestones look like deep fissures.

  13. Nice but... it's time to put a stop to the misuse of the word 'cobbles'. Jutland Street, and thousands like it, are paved not with cobbles but with stone setts which are cut blocks of stone, usually granite, purpose made for road surfacing. Cobbles are actually weathered stones or pebbles which have not been shaped by man. They are usually found in seaside villages. So there.

  15. Wonderman is of course correct. I suspected these weren't strictly cobblestones (but did not know they were called stone setts). There are plenty of real cobblestones on the bridges of the Macclesfield Canal where I walk often, and other places too. But I took artistic licence here and like many of the April theme day entries, this interpreattion of cobblestones was what was used...Perhaps I should call "April Fool"!

  16. Cobbles or setts are very evocative of Manchester's past and it's good that they remain here on Manchester's steepest street after all the old buildings have been replaced.

Don't worry about calling them cobblestones, Chrissy - many people would, and to most people cobbles and setts are interchangeable. The "cobblestones" on my own blog photo are probably setts as well, but who's counting? :)

  17. One of my favourite photos of Jutland Street was taken by Aidan O'Rourke in 1997 before the walls either side were demolished and des-res apartments were built. My kids used to love the big dipper effect!
