Percy Brothers Ltd appears to have once been a printing press, part of the Hotspur Press building which now house various artists. A lovely old sign, this is taken round the back of the building away from the more impressive iron signage on the front.
The building started life as a textile mill - Medlock Mill, in the 19th Century. It is now home to various artists' studios and other creatuve spaces, or was the last time I popped in a year or two back.
Hello to "H" at this week's ABC Wednesday.
It was always in the back of my mind that this might have been the home of 'The Hotspur'. It wasn't of course, it was one of D.C. Thomson's comics.
ReplyDeleteYes I had always hoped there would be a treasure trove of Bunty, Buster and Wizard etc. inside!
DeleteAh, you're FAR to young to remember those!
DeleteI served my apprenticeship as a 'compositor to letterpress printing' here in the 1950s, subsequently becoming a Linotype operator and then proof-reader. If anyone would like more info on Percy Brothers, just email me at cliffordbevan@gmail.com
DeleteGhost signs are so cool!
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful old building- wonderful that it's still being used.

I'm not at all a fan of new "modern" buildings, but I have to admit that I kind of like the design of the one in the background. HOWEVER, the awesome historical building in the foreground, appeals to me on so many levels. If I had to choose which one to work in, live in, or even look at, I'd pick the old one every time.
ReplyDeletei am very found of exploring about old & historic buildings. nice to read your informative blog. Car Parking Manchester
ReplyDeleteLove this building and its history! Great new use for it!
ReplyDeleteI worked at Percy Brothers from 1966 to 1970. My father worked there in the forties and my grandfather for 47 years before that. I have a Programme for a picnic in front of me which was held on August 27th 1921. Food served included 'Stewed Fruits. Cup Custard. Jelly and Blanc-Mange' for those social historians amongst you.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite incidents was the Guinness lorry that overturned on the corner when approaching too fast. Out came the machine minders like rats out of a drain pipe and before you knew it, all the bottles scattered on the road had disappeared like crumbs off the lawn. Happy days!
