A lovely old advertisement on the side of an apartment block, formerly a lead works, in Dulcie St. The company of HA Howard & Sons can be traced back to the 1940s. My further research indicates that Gileric were a label of their day, making dresses and tunics from the 1940s to the 1960s, possibly even earlier. Are any vintage clothes aficionados able to help me out here?

ReplyDeletehave a great Sunday,
Léia
Excellent! Wonderful shot Chrissy.
ReplyDeleteIt's great some of those old signs are still around! Good shot!
ReplyDeleteSorry, never heard of them, but fashion is not big on my list of things. I do love these old signs, I cannot think of one that I have seen here in Leeds.
ReplyDeleteI have seen such painted signs myself - but they are rapidly beeing painted over - the explanation being that they are of 'no interest'.
ReplyDeleteIt's great in a way that you are acting as a kind of official recorder of these disapearing elements...
What a fantastic ghost sign
ReplyDeleteBrilliant vintage sign Chrissy, it's in excellent condition too, great find!
ReplyDeleteI love finding ghost signs like this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the fact that this sign isn't a ghost yet. Someone loved it enough to repaint it along the way. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteGil and Eric were the two sons and brothers that ran this company. Gil was actually my grandpa. He died some time ago but I remember going in to the stock room as a child and playing underneath the racks of dresses. Trying to get more history about the building - Would love any further info.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, Gil & Eric, of course! thanks Victoria- I have no other info sadly.
DeleteGil was your grandpa?? small world his sister was my mother , my mum would take me there as a little one ,I remember the dark wooden floors and doors..Some of the staff used to give me sweets, happy memories
DeleteMy father worked there until he retired in the late seventies/early 80s. I remember Mr Eric very well. I too used to play in various places in that building. Many fond memories. Also it was my uncle that painted the sign.
DeleteThis advert was uncovered in 1991 when the newer advertising hoarding was removed prior to the building being renovated.
ReplyDeleteIt was decided on first sight that it would kept and restored and I am glad to see it's still there. At the time the building was semi-derelict and quite spooky inside, I worked for the people who owned it at the time.
It's spelt, DUCIE Street, no 'L'
ReplyDeleteI lived here over a decade ago. Beautiful building. I always wondered what a "gileric gown" was, and now I now it was a brand!
