Sky, stairs, squares & students

This is one end of the Chandos Hall student accommodation block in the city centre. With circa 80,000 students in Manchester and Salford, and many heading back here this coming weekend, housing stock is at a premium.

Last week I enjoyed an 1972 student filmed tour of UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) which includes footage of this building and many other typical student activities and campus classics of the era. It's fifteen minutes of footage taken in a bygone age of rag weeks and the Bogle stroll (a sponsored 55-mile walk).

  1. Students in Stockholm have to sleep in basements, in sleeping bags because of the lack of student housing.

  2. I can see a staircase like that giving problems to someone who doesn't like heights.

One of the universities here has been buying nearby buildings in the last couple of years to house more students in residence, as they've pretty much run out of room to build on the campus itself.
