Quota of bluebells: The Bluebell by Emily Brontë

May is not May until I have been on some quiet woodland walks to admire my annual quota of quality bluebells. This is taken on the banks of the River Bollin.

Extracts from The Bluebell by Emily Brontë (1850)

The Bluebell is the sweetest flower
That waves in summer air:
Its blossoms have the mightiest power
To soothe my spirit's care.

There is a spell in purple heath
Too wildly, sadly dear;
The violet has a fragrant breath,
But fragrance will not cheer,

The Bluebell cannot charm me now,
The heath has lost its bloom;
The violets in the glen below,
They yield no sweet perfume.

But, though I mourn the sweet Bluebell,
'Tis better far away;
I know how fast my tears would swell
To see it smile to-day.

How do I weep, how do I pine
For the time of flowers to come,
And turn me from that fading shine,
To mourn the fields of home!

  2. Haven't seen them yet where I live, but then I haven't been visiting those places where they tend to grow. I'll have to keep my eyes open for those blossoms that can "smooth my spirit's care". Thanks!

  17. This reminds me so much of the village where I grew up in Northamptonshire. We had a huge wood, called Bluebell Wood, (for obvious reasons). It was such a magical place to visit, with wild deer, rabbits, hedgehogs and numerous birds. Funny, this is the first time in ages I have thought about it.
