I am not sure if today's post strictly constitutes a mural or not? Building work is going on on the corner of the Portland Street and Charlotte Street block.
I have noticed ever more these days that instead of scaffolding protected by plastic sheets, technological advances have led to giant photo montage reproductions of the actual building being renovated underneath.
Shop signs are then mounted on top, as we have here with the Ciao Bella and Ocean restaurants. This also goes around the corner where there is a giant advertising hoarding mounted on top of the mural, which is a shame. There is a frame on the front too if you look closely, so I fear this too may be ruined by adverts... I wonder how long the work will take?
A big improvement on plastic sheeting or just exposed scaffolding!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the one over the Plaza in Stockport when that was being done.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea. Haven't seen much of it here, yet.
ReplyDeleteVery original and a much better view than a normal site under construction.
ReplyDeleteLooks good for shire. Like it
ReplyDeleteI like the idea - but not if they are going to use the space with big advertisements! This is a very interesting concept - I haven't seen this method used here in the States yet - at least not where I live.
ReplyDeleteI once met a guy who worked for the company that produced these enormous sheets. It was printed on a fabric which meant that any creases would pull out when it was tightened on its frame.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea though. Perhaps we could use ones like this to cover some of the uglier buildings!
I like it they use those giant photoprints, much better than an advertisement or a pin-up girl.
ReplyDeletethat's pretty neat!
ReplyDeleteReally cool! It was done here at the Supreme Court. Love how it looks. Thank you Chrissy.
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to say hello, great blog.
ReplyDeleteCheers!

I've never seen an attempt to beautify a construction project before. This is an idea that needs to catch on.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool, I've never seen these before, they are far nicer than typical scaffolding, and quite 'mural'-ish to boot!:)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant...it definitely works for me!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that done here. I love the idea!
ReplyDeleteWell I'll be darned! Never seen it done this way, over on the other side of the pond. But such a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI have seen this type of thing in France and Germany and it sure beats scaffolding. By the way I think it counts as a mural.
ReplyDeleteprettying up a construction site is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteNow that's different.
ReplyDeleteReally neat one!
ReplyDeleteSo much nicer than traditional scaffolding. I've seen striking use of these during renovations in Venice and Rome. Now Manchester! Advertising sort of defeats the purpose of these cool, realistic photos. Thanks for sharing with us and contributing to Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteI know what to call it! I'd call it amazing! What a fantastic idea and a great find by you!
ReplyDeleteI first started seeing these pop up all over the Grand Canal in Venice, which is a perfect place for them. Nice to see the concept is spreading, they are so much nicer that plain white plastic.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting!
